ok boys and girls, i'm looking for a sweet engine to put in my project, its a td wagon. I have thought about most engines and i think the fj20 would be my best bet. I just wanna know, if i bought one, would i have to get it fully rebuilt? and if not, how strong are they, like would they last without a rebuild? i know it depends on the condition of the engine, and its a hard question to ask!! Any help would be great, also any other engines which would get my wagon running somewhere under 13 sec quarter. Thanks

my brother has a fj20 n/a in his datsun 1600 and it shit itself and its getting rebuit atm and they couldnt find pistons to fit it anywhere in australia so they have 2 machine it out 60thou and fit bigger pistons and make rings to fit (costing about 3g all up for a pretty standard kinda rebuilt)... go tha sr |

your best bet would probably be the sr20. the main problem with fj20s are their age and most you come acros need to be freshened up. It is also kinda of hard the find people who speacialise in fj's. They are really tough motors though most of my mates have 1600's and 3 of which have fj's one with 200kw's at the wheels that blew up on a down change at 8000rpm into 4th (been in this car car bouncing off the rev limiter in 5th scary).
Hope my ramblings help in some way

theres heaps of people who know about and work on them actually. theres more off the shelf performance parts for them than the SR20. and theres less shit to worry about.
if u were to buy one i would recomend a rebuild tho as there over 10 years old.
theres more stats and knowlage on teh performance side of the fj20 than the sr20 at the momnet but the SR20 isnt far be hind it.
if u dont belive me, count the amout of drag/street and cars in mags with engin conversions between sr and fj. u can count the SR's on ya 2 hands, but theres HEAPS of FJ20's
its up to your personal choice really |

i spose, i dunno i spose the sr20 would be the way to go, they are out of a 96 200sx right? but yeh,its only like a few hundered difference from a jap engine import place....the sr and fj would be around the same for performance though right? by spending that little bit extra, i'll save myself shitloads down the track, and thats what i want...so yeh i guess i'll have to go the sr20 |
