does anyone know of a way to stop petrol coming out of the vapour hole on the petrol cap and running down the side of the car

Without payin out on ya, just don't fill it as much mate... As temperature changes petrol expands and shrinks, if you leave it in the sun it will expand and that breather hole will vent it out, common problem on most cars, except the gems just pour it out on the body work...
