My Gem has an inconsistent ignition prob. Every now and then when it decides to be difficult, I turn the key to start it and there is a click (sounds sorta like maybe starter solenoid) but no start. I turn it again, same thing 'click' and no start. But, after a few attempts it decides to turn over and act as though nothing happened. It only does this from time to time - sometimes it'll go for a few day's without doing this, then suddenly 'click & no kick'. It idles fine, drives fine, etc. So it can be quite annoying at times. I've checked and reconnected the wiring to the starter with fresh terminals, but still no change. I've been told by a few so-called Gemini experts (read: their mates mothers best friends neighbour let them look at their Gem once!) that this is a typical Gemini complaint but they can't (strangely enough) remember what it is or how to fix it. Has anybody else out ther experienced this on their GemBox, coz it's getting annoying and sometimes embarassing when you score a hot chick to cruise with for the typical Fri. Sat. night mission. "Ummm, yeah, don't worry baby. it's just an immobiliser thing you wouldn't understand. ummm yeah..." |

First of all, how old is your starter motor? Could be the brushes are worn causing the starter to 'throw-out' but not turn.
Older cars also tend to run their starting circuit through the ignition barrel. As the wiring gets old, it doesn't carry the current as well causing voltage drop. My first TC did the same thing till I put in a starter relay. This carries current directly from the battery to the starter solenoid when the key is turned, and puts alot less strain on the ignition circuit in the steering column.
Hope this helps, -Yonnee. |

Used to happen to me too. The starter motor sticks. The RACQ guy showed me the technically challenging way of fixing it... Take a heavy instrument, hammer, shifter, etc and beat the crap out of it. Well, give it a few good whacks will probably do. |

yea, my bet would be on the started motor and the brushes, wot happens is it needs a shit load more power from the battery than it usually does, and it's sorta like a flat battery, just connect some voltage monitor 2 ure battery and look wot happens, if it drains a shit load of power, and no start, it's ur starter motor
happened on my mums corolla

Actually it is usually the solnoid binding in it's barrel, if you can get a bit of lub down there it will free up,
and work fine again,
