Early model head in whatever condition $50-$150, rebuilt (any model) head 2nd hand around $300-$400... ported, polished, big valve head with quad throttle bodies, big billet cams, tuned length 4-1 mandrel bent extractors |

Well Heffy,
Head can be cheap or expensive.
Depends on the age of the head, the size of the port, and whether false teeth are involved.
Crack hoes usually will give you a good deal as they need the $5 or so to buy formula for their baby. |

the reason i'm lookin for a new head, is coz when i down gear my car back fires heaps. i was told it's coz my valves are leaking or sumthin and i need to replace em
so i don't know exactly waht the best thing to fix this would be.
i have a tf 1600 |

Define what you mean by down gear, do you mean cahngin down a gear, letting the clutch out, and coasting to a stop/slowing down, ie, no throttle.
Does it actually backfire really loudly, or just 'pop'??
Pop is normal, If it backfires, then it could be from a carb problem giving too rich an idle mixture, so it collects in your exhasut and combusts.
Do you have a realible mechanic to take the car to and ask for advice.
get some head, think it over, and talk to a mechanic. If he says about the 'leaking valves' thing too, then maybe thats what it is.
What condition is the carb in, caked with crap?

I have the same thing on my TF, it "pop's" when i take the foot off the accelerator, however it only usually happens when the car is still warming up (first 5-10mins) and its an auto (which sux). I think the head is gone too and will get around to a reco one as soon as i have the funds, although saw a sweet arse burgundy td (i think) coupe for sale, wide mags etc, so i might fork out for that (i'm too lazy for resto's
anyway yeah, your not the only one with that prob in a TF |
