can you paint over existing paint rather than rubbing it back to bare metal?
what preparation needs to be done and what paint is best to use? |

It can be done, but if you are wanting a faultless paint finish, it is best to go bare-metal. |

All you really need to do to paint a car, is sand the existing paint till the shine come soff, then undercoat it, rub it back till it's all baby smooth, then paint it. |

Yeah but that depends on how well the existing paint has adhered to the metal. No point spending hours getting the top coat looking a million dollars if the paint underneath starts to peel off. Also, you can run into trouble if you don't know what type of paint you're painting over; ie, enamel, arcrylic, 2 pak, etc. Some wont go over others without lifting the whole lot!
Preparation is the key difference between an average finish and "Top Paint" at any car show.

But that's also why paint shops mostly use oven baked enamel. Enamel will go over any other paint, has reasonable gloss off the gun, and baking it gives a fairly tough finish. But not many people have an oven in their backyard. |
