It was 'Street Machine'. The article was about the police, along with the RTA and the EPA holding a blitz in one particular town on the way to Summernats. Basically the brief was to target "modified" cars. Anything and everything was tested, checked and examined until they found a defect in every car they could. One account was given by a reader who got pulled over and "defected". Among other things his rear seatbelts didn't retract by themselves all the way. They wouldn't let him leave with his rear seat passengers with the seatbelts in that condition, and only gave him an hour to rectify the belts. Then proceeded to have the EPA go over his car, which took 25 mins, and told him he had 35 mins left to get the belts fixed. He then was given an escort to the nearest town big enough to stock spare belts, which was half an hour away. And you guessed it...was made to leave his car and walk because his hour was up!
Surely police resources could have been better spent helping the people who were struggling with the bushfires neaby at the time. It amazes me that our police force wonder why they have a bad rapport (look it up) with people in the modified car community. On one hand they participate in the 'off street drags' to help with their image, and then they go and do something like this.
That's just my two cents. |
