hey all, I recently purchased a g200 and I'm getting the crank reground ($110!!) cause one of the big end journals is heaps smaller than the others. The guy at the machine shop said to bring in the conrods for him to have a look. I know one of them is a bit burnt(the one that went on the smaller journal). Anyway, is a burnt conrod a big deal? Will I need a new one or is this guy trying to get some more $$ out of me? |

i mean they've got like bluish/black marks on them, someone told me they were 'burnt', because the guy I bought them off may have run the engine with little/no oil or it's spun a bearing. the guy at the machine shop wants me to bring them in to 'have a look'. what i want to know is is it really a problem or is this guy just trying to get a bit more $$ outta me? My brother tells me thats what happened to his V8 and before he knew it they were rebuilding the entire engine for him!! |

If they have gotten hot enough to get bluish/black marks on them, the have quite possibly gone out of round and need to be remachined and honed. This might cost around $100 for the set.
Ask how he tells if they are out of round, I assume he will use a micrometer and adjusting do-dad to measure, if so, get him to measure them in front of you and ask him to show you the measurements as he does them because you are curious/interested. From a guess, they should not be more than 2-4 thou out of round.
Worst case scenario, spend $100 and know that you have got a dinky die set of rods.
