just wondering........are there any markings on a gearbox which indicate its a 4 or 5 speed( i have a one sitting in the boot of a TD, not sure of the speed, shifter isnt fitted)

The rear extension housing, where it bolts up to the rest of the box, will have a bulge at the bottom. If this bulge extends backwards about two inches, it's a four speed. If the bulge is about six to eight inches, it's a five.
Even without the shifter, if you look down throught the quadrant box you'll see three shafts, all with a slot in them. When the slots are lined up, the box is in neutral. If you can move the left-hand shaft backwards, it's got 5. |

Easiest check is look for th bolt holes on top of the rear ext housing for the remote shift which came on the twin cams. 4 speeds dont have it. |
