If it wasn't blowing the smoke when it used to be running then try giving it a minor service - new oil with filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, That sort of thing. Leaving your engine unturned for that amount of time would have let all the oil drain almost completely to the sump. So when you went to start it, it had basically no lubrication on the top-end or bores. Which would have created a fair amount of wear on your internals. So try doing that with a gentle warm up and go easy on it for it's first couple of outings.
Changing the rings isn't exactly an easy job for a novice, but it does give you a learning experience and confidence to pull other things down on your engine once you've completed it.
I used to know what the different colored smoke from an engine indicated - can anyone quickly let us know, there's probably a few people here that would like to know that sort of thing.

your best bet might be some powertune, engine cleaner, we use it at work on 4stroke outboards that blow a bit of smoke, it losens a piston ring that may be caught because of a little carbon build up, you just spray it in the carby with 3/4 throttle on and wait til the engine dies, then let it sit for ten(you can put some directly into the cylinder via spark plug holes) then after ten minutes, u start her up again and give it a bit of a rev and it fixes the prob 75 percent of the time.
cheers
