Ok, I know I am usually answering rather than asking, but I have a question. Does anyone have a suggestion as how to stop the distributor on my motor slowing retarding the engine timing as it moves slowly over time.

When we set my engine up a month ago we dialed in 10 degrees of initial advance, deliberately more than stock because of the 30/70 cam. Yesterday we reset the timing, it had wound itself around to 1 degree AFTER!!!!! top dead centre. Not a good thing, not a good thing at all. Tightening the hell out of the the 12mm distributor bolt isn't an option as the alloy of the timing case just strips itself. For now I will be checking the timing on a twice weekly basis, this combined with weekly tappet clearance checks and daily oil and coolant checks is getting a little bit too much.

I realise this may sound stupid, but mark your dizzy and timing cover with a scribe or a white line etc and check to see if the dizzy is actually moving, because your points gap actually effects timing. If you have movement in your dizzy shaft, and your points are gradually closing up, then your timing will be slowly advancing. Every time you change points you must reset your timing, because an extra 5 degree of dwell can cause timing retard or advancement.
If your dizzy is actually moving, then something is wrong. Be it your clamp might be bent, or something more serious like a warped dizzy shaft causing the dizzy to vibrate loose.

Checked the dwell, smack bang where we set it, darn, I was hoping it would be the problem, I think the problem is probably related to the massively eroded and 33% stripped thread on the distributor clamp bolt limiting how hard we can tighten it down, that combined with all three drivers (me, my father and my sister) revving the engine to around 6500 before changing gears (is there any other way to drive??).

whats the 2 lt go like 0 - 100 yet just with stop watch ???
