u would prolly think i would know the answer to this, but im striping down a tx coupe for a complete rebuild, its goin back to bare metal, but it is not being sent to the panel shop to be prepared yet, but i am paint stipping and sanding it back to bare metal myself, im wonding cos its not in the best spot for a project gem im wondering if i should strip it and then spray it with etch primer to stop it rusting, mind u there is welding and bogging to be done.
suggestions please, as i have more work to do before it can go to the panel shop, but i want it stripped back ready to go |

etch primer is still porous.. you need to do a panel at a time..and etch/undercoat, to stop surface rust , or strip it all back and take it to them directly.. the more surface rust you get.. the harder it is to prep for paint _________________

strip it and etch prime it, etch prime stops water better then normal primer. (being a spray painter apprentice i thought u would know this)
but still cover it up good witha tarp. also yo should etch prime b4 u putty and fill anyways. filler should not be applyed to bare metal _________________

true.. undercoat is more porous.. i've always put it on scarcly (etch)so it tends to bond better.. but everyone is different! _________________

well i took my wagon back to bare metal and it was 10months before it was painted. i just took it to bare metal made sure all my welding and repairs were done made sure there wasnt a single imperfection then coated it once with 2pac etch primer. it then sat in the shed for a month or 2 before being taken to spray booth. in my opinion u would be silly not to etch it and/ or prime it. |

i was referring to etch priming then primer filling gene,
he may as well do both and then all they have to do is top coat it.
seems logical to me |

lebel smabel! what happends when the paint u applied it to flakes off? known to happen with old 2pack, all ur bog and body work comes undone, it is a rule in the industry that you stip the patch back to bare metal, apply the filler, then undercoat |

after stripping ym car i had a bit of surface rust. I sanded it out and anything i wasnt sure of i used rust converter. Then re sanded and prep washed. Etch primed it with 2 coats and has been sitting in the shed un covered for atleast 4 months now and havent had a problem with it yet so far. |
