If looking into the engine bay over the drivers side guard, the screw with the philips style head and a spring around it is the air/fuel mixture. It's a general rule to not tamper with this unless your confident enough to do so. The common practice is to turn this screw in all the way gently till it seats (engine not running). Then unscrew it approx 3 1/2 turns out. Before you do play with it, count the number of full revolutions it takes to turn it all the way in till it seats. This way you have an idea on what it was set at before you tampered with it.
The idle screw is to the left of the air/fuel screw, it has a flat tip screwdriver head design. To raise the idle turn it anti-clockwise, and vice-versa to lower it (obviously).
To properly tune the carb, the air/fuel screw must be set correctly for the particular engine, then the idle can be set to the desired level.
Backfiring can also be a symptom of incorrect ignition timing or a faulty ignition system, or a faulty exhaust/muffler.
But if your positive that it may be the fuel delivery or idle, then have a play and see what it turns up.
