When my gem (TD)was wired back up recently, the guy found a switch on the accelerator and on the clutch that he wired back up. wiring goes to a solenoid on the nikki carby so that when your foot is removed from the accelerator, the mixture is leaned up. Same when the clutch is depressed. I don't remember this ever being on the car from new. What's it for?? |

its the coasting ritcher solenoid, there will be another switch on the transmission and when your in 3/4/5 gear, clutch engaged and accelerating the mixtures are changed slightly for emissions and fuel ecconomy. |

It's a good thing, you dont need fuel when you're coasting..
EFI cars don't use any fuel when coasting |

Only some dont use any fuel, from what I read, its a relatively new idea. |

doesnt use fuel when coasting? hows that supposed to work? wouldnt that prevent combustion? you tried coasting down the road and turning the ignition off? i tell you that it drags the car down quite a bit.....

There's no need for it when you don't need to make any power from the engine..
I try cutting ignition it doesn't really do much |

From what I read, it has only (in the last few years) started to be integreated into the majority of ECM systems. Even if bosch developed it in the 80's, I dont think all of the delcos, etc, use the technique. I really dont know though, its just something I read in an aftermarket computer review that sprang to mind. |

i found some wires hanging down a few weeks ago. they were attached to the switch on my accelorater.
my question is, does it really matter? should i re-attach them or would it be a waste of time?
thanks |

If you are not using the standard carby, then it wont matter. If you are using the standard carby, then it will probably still be running fine. If I was stuck with the standard carby, I would be pulling every bit of pollution crap off of it, and just keep the fuel shut off solenoid operational. |

dont know what your cars doing, but if my car ran without any fuel when coasting id get it fixed.
there has to be some ammount of fuel passing through no matter if your coasting or not. |
