Sounds like you have backlash in your gearbox or diff, also check your tailshaft bolts,
Jack up one rear wheel off the ground and turn the wheel by hand with the car in gear ( try using different gears to compare the slick) , if you more than 1/8th roughly of turn your box or diff are in trouble, look under the car at the tail shaft and see if it turns with the wheel or it may have slack before it starts turning, most like the diff has back lash ( free play before it engages) diff are about $50 - $100,
good luck

Also if it is a large bang type noise that only happens when the car is coasting, then your diff is F**K'D, as this noise is the centre lay shaft sliding from one end to the other and hitting the pinion on each rotation of the diff, which won't last long until it locks your back wheels, or you actually cut the centre shaft with the pinion like a knife then the spider gears fall out and lock the diff either way get a new diff fast this is never nice when it locks in the wet.

I had a similar problem with a TE that I have previously owned. Every time i shifted down a gear, a real fast repedative clunking noise came from directly underneath.
So I put the car over the pit and had a look underneath, turned out that it was just one of those solid rear brake cables that had come loose from it's support. Reconnected it, fixed the problem completely!

if its not what gene said...might be tho coz he had it happen...anyways.

when i had a corona i had te same thing.

both my bolt-nuts came off the tailshaft and was hanging by a bent bolt.

it felt out and nearly ripped the car apart when i was driving in an 80 zone.

but put the bolts in with a coathanger to push the things in there (ghard to get fingers in)
but thats it.
