well, after finally getting to bed at 2:45am today, ive got a few tips about changing your sump and/or sump seal without removing the engine...

to put it bluntly, it was a real slut. firstly, id been using about 1l of oil a day and kinda got sick of waking up in the morning with all the oil on the driveway instead of in the sump.
the only way to change the sump seal is to remove the sump. the only way to remove the sump is to jack the engine up so the fan is sticking out above the bonnet line.
to do this you have to unbolt:
-tailshaft
-gearbox rear mounts
-engine mounts
-radiator
-fuel lines
-steel brackets that go between block & engine gearbox bell housing support
-bonnet
-exhaust manifold/extractors

this allows you to get to the 20 or so sump bolts and take out the sump, manoevering it around as to take it out between the front sway bar and front bar that goes under the radiator. be careful as to not dribble the left over sump oil while your doing so!

i started at 3pm, and by 2:15am i was driving down to the servo bonnetless.

so in the end its possible; but near enough to taking the engine out...

hope this answers previous posts on sump replacement!!!!!

My question would be why??
Surely by the time you removed the tailshaft and gearbox mounts you could have undone the bellhousing bolts and starter? Might have been quicker in the long run with less agro manoeuvring the sump around the cross-member and oil pickup. Unless you can't get your hands on a crane or block & tackle.

Quick story. Neighbour across the road did the same thing with his 202 VH Dore. Jacked the motor high enough to stretch the linkage to the auto. Inhibitor switch in Commodores is on T-bar. Long story short, car all finished, turned the key, started with a rev, car rocketed out the "single" brick garage door backwards with the doors open.

Well done though.

Yonnee.
