I was under the impression that moist thick cool air was better? I could be way off here.
The air out of the air conditioner is dry - thats why it goes through a dryer and you end up with a puddle of water under the car.
Howver to be honest i think it's just a pointless excercise!
If you need to waste a lot of time give it a go though.

Somehow I don't think the fan blower would be able to keep up air flow supply to even a stock 1600 at full noise.
I KNOW.... hang a bucket of dry ice off the end of your air cleaner inlet, that should cool the air down!! lol ] |

hey gene
well im by no means an expert, but from what i read, it seems that colld air intakes are quite useful on efi cars and i assume this is because of teh abilty of teh ecu's in them to change mixture and such automatically... because how i see it is that colder air is denser so therefore if you dont re-adjust your mixture (like rejetting the carb) then you will have a leaner mixture, so you will just have more air and not more fuel aswell whereas in an efi application the amount of fuel would increase, and thus a bigger power gain would be experienced, and as for the air-conditioner idea if it did give a power gain (providing it could gvie enough volume like others had stated) the gain would be negated by teh power used to run teh aircon...
just my 2 cents
if anyone can enlighten me as to errors in my thinking it would be much appreciated
hope this helps

How about an air conditioned intercooler? |

Thats what i was thinking. Dont want an intercooler but still want to run high boost? Hook your turbo up to the air conditioner of your car. |

I think using an intercooler with the air con blowing on it through a shroud would be the best way of doing it, using the same principles of CPU heatsinks.
Hrrrm.. don't think it would be worth it, someone surely would have tried it out before now. And as someone else mentioned, the air con power drain would negate any increase. |

Just a thought... Would the gasses used in the air-con system do more harm than good? I dont know the exact type of gas used off hand but surely it would make the air/fuel ratio go all over the shop. I know this is just a wild idea that will never eventuate, but from a technical point, the gas used in air-con would have to be inert (non-combustible) and therefore pump more dead (but cold) air into the carb. Would that be right? It sounds right...

Nope... A/C is a sealed system (or should be The coolant gas is expanded rapidly, cools and acts as a heat sink for the cabin air that is blown across a cooling element. The gas and air never mix.
my 2c worth is that it's going to cost you more hp running the A/C than the cold air will deliver. There are more efficient ways of making air more dense...(maybe an esky of liquid nitrogen under the bonnet |

of course the carbon dioxide in the dry ice will stop the fuel burning ( ie no power!). that could be why they use it in fire extinguishers... |

ive got a mate who puts the heater on when driving because he believes that it flushes the hot air out of the engine bay!! what about that for an idea. |

Yeah, I read an article once on a Japanese S14 Drift machine, the car being constantly on the redline made the engine overheat. The air temperature outside was over 30 degrees, so he ran the cabin heaters flat out with the cars windows down to achieve slightly better engine cooling! |
