head gasket?

I've just pulled the head off my TD 1600 and the head gasket has fried slightly, not all the way through, the part between the water jacket on the right and piston 2, even less on piston no.1 - I caught it really early - ie. there was no water in the oil but it was vaperising into the rocker cover. My question is - do you think I need to have the head looked at or simply replace the gasket and whack it back together???? Cheers

Can ya help me with an answer for the above Q - I gotta know the answer for 2morrow so I know whether to take my head with me to work or not??

All I can suggest is, if you have them, grab a feeler guage set and a straight edge (steel ruler). With the straight edge around the point which the gasket blew, see if you can poke the smallest feeler blade between the gap. If you can, gat the head machined. If you cant, you'll probably get away with a new head gasket. But I'd advise re-torqueing after a few hundred kms, even "Monotorque" should be re-torqued.

How old is the head? If its been there for years etc it may be worth while getting the valve seats etc done may even be time for a full rebuild, who knows. Any decent place should check the head out for free and tell you what needs to be done. Probably be a good idea to get a surface grind at the very least to make sure you have a nice flat surface for the gasket to seal on. You could probably have a fair bit shaved off if the heads stock to up the compression a bit which wont cost any extra.

Monotorque is a brand of head gasket. In my opinion Durapro are heaps better and graphite coated, only a few dollars extra too.

Not alot of places would stock graphite coated gaskets though.

thats no labour or anything... thats retail of course but its still a bloody lot of money

thats how much it usually costs to replace a head gasket on a corrolla including labour!

NO SHIT!!!!!!!! i wasquoated $60 for a hed gasket and thought it better be a fuking good one but it was a acl one

Nargh - Ultra Torque Heads in campbletown did a great job on the head about 6 mths ago. It's shaved to the valve seats, got the big valves in it - cause I measured em! and then realised of course it would as it's a TD, (the older heads always have the big valve's!! According to other posts). It's got a cam marked 30/70 and new hardened valve springs - extensive porting/polishing done to it. And looks smick inside - new timing chain, complete bottom end rebuild but no bore?? Why would you do that??? See I have just bought this car - pissed to twin delorto's off and replaced them with a 32/36 DGV after doing Bens manifold alterations. But during that job I failed to reconnect the temp gauge because it was blowing fuses, then I got a leak in the back of the lower heater hose, drove for about another 20klms flat out with no water cause I had no idea - stereo was belting out the sounds - damn those Pioneer CD players sometimes - THEY'RE SO FUCKIN LOUD!!!!! Specially with the amp that it's got. Anyway - noticed a sign of water in the rocker cover and got straight to it. Now I'll get a straight edge and let you all know the result tomorrow - thanks for the advice and the different gasket types too - I thought you were having a shot at me!! darghhh
