What would weight more?
-1977 TC Gemini 1.6L Coupe
-1976 MKII four door 2L Escort
I am guessing that the Escort would weigh more, but im not sure. |

Oh well - then it comes down to which one has more air in the tyres - cause everyone knows a car with 32psi in the tyres weighs more than a car with 30 psi.....so there's your answer - get a tyre gauge and check the pressures!! |

I can tell you the 1973 rs2000 weighed in at 915kg and did 0-100 in 9 sec.
Are we helping yet? |

I think that you will find that the 2L escort didn't come out until 1977 ( not counting the mk1 rs2000) so if someone is trying to sell you a 76 2L then is must be a conversion from 1300 or 1600
for 1977 2L escorts,
Ghia 4door 2L man = 950 kg
GL 4 door 2L man = 884 kg
Ghia 4 door auto = 960 kg
GL 4 door auto = 894 kg
gl 2 door man = 865 kg ( for comparison)
1600 cars are about 15-20 kg lighter, but much less power
gemini coupe man = 903 kg
gemini 4 door man =913 kg
these are all as factory curb weights, ie including vinyl roofs, rally pack spoilers, spare tyres, jack, tookit etc
advantages = escort gets more power, easier to get performance bits, lots of knowledge out there about everything,
gem has std 5 speed, better handling ( especially rear end is better tied down) better head design, easy conversion to larger capacity engines
disadvantages = too much power for rear end to handle timing belt can break, bending valves
gemini = less power, girl car rep, riced up a lot too
I have owned 1300, 1600 and 2L escorts, just sold my latest escort and bought a gem, mostly because the gem is a fully worked rally car, and cheaper than doing up the escort by a long shot. |

Thanks for the only straight answer in this whole thread!
Yes, the escort that i was refering to has had a 1600-2000 conversion, i probably should have mentioned that.
My gem is a TC Coupe auto, and although it came out factory weighing about 900kg, i have managed to shed the weight down to 860kg.
The reason for this question actually relates to a magazine article that i read recently, about the escort in question.
It had 81rwkw @ 7000rpm and was doing a quater mile of 14.3 seconds. I found this fairly impressive , and thought of the potential that my gemini could possibly posses if it was tuned to similar or greater specs!
The only thing that this article did not mention was the weight of the Escort, and after I got sick of searching throught escort sites, i resorted to making a post in the forum. I have finally come to the conclusion that the weight difference between the escort and my own car is minimal, and that was all i wanted to know.
sorry for rambling on for so long.
Thanks again |

no probs, my (current) gemini is a hell of a lot faster than any of my escorts were, in the straight line and around corners, but this is a direct relation ship to the amount of money spent on them:
escort 2L -$2100 about 60 rwkw and 900kg, lots of axle tramp
gemini rally car -$god only knows but I paid $4500 80 rwkw @6500 rpm and ~900kg, perfectly sorted suspension, roll cage, seats, terratrip, terraphone, 2x sets cibie oscars, spare nearly everything.... |
