It definitely sounds like the same problem I had. I don't know much but what I had to do after I put my 2L in was make sure piston 1 (closest to the front of car) was at top dead centre. The big cog that the timing chain turns over to turn the cam has a little locating pin on it, this also has to be at dead top centre. Don't forget to do the valve clearances as well. Sorry I don't know more, but that may help.

Tim, the dissy spins anti-clockwise. Take No.1 plug out and get someone to turn the motor over by hand with your thumb in the hole. When you feel the compression build up as you near top dead centre, the rotor should be pointing at the lead to No.1. The next one round on the dissy cap, anti-clockwise, is No.3, then 4, then 2.
How far did you pull the motor apart?
When you crank the motor, is there spark from the coil? There should be, irrespective of the firing order.

Hope this helps,
Yonnee.

dunno if i am right, but on the 16oo, the cam/crank timing is as follows.
remove rocker cover
remove bolt holding fanbelt wheen on crank.
when the dowl hole on the cam sprocket is up, the key indentation on the crank should be up.....can be adjusted with a screwdriver and a 17mm ringspanner...youll figure it out....
once this is done, do the ignition timing, valve clearences. crank it up, let 'er rip.
hope this helps.
rob.
