Motor Wont Start !!!

My motor is an absolute bitch to start. Its a litre twin cam EFI from a piazza (non turbo). I've just installed a new battery and the engine starter motor cranks over fine but it takes fucking ages for the engine to start up. Sometimes it works pretty easily other times it just doesn't start and you get a strong petrol smell. I'm guessing I'm flooding it. I thought it may have just been cold but even if you manage to get it started and let it run for a while then switch it off and try and start it again it can sometimes still be a bitch to start.

I've checked all the usual stuff, dizzy cap, rotors, plugs, points etc for any crap but they seem clean and dry.

Any idea what the problem could be, its pissing me off since I want this to be a reliable car and its hardly reliable if it takes ages to get it to kick over.

Anyone got any idea of what the problem is ?

Flooding it? You shouldnt have to pump the pedal when your starting it, the computer should work out the motors cold and run it richer to compensate. I would probably check the injectors and make sure their all clean.

For starters
-whats your cylinder compression?
- are the leads good? If they are old, high resistance will rob the current going to your plugs, giving a weak or non existent spark.
