I have not been on here for a bit so i put this to the fron so you don't have to go over things again.
With my conversion, i had the engine sitting there so i didn't have money to throw away. I saw that other people had done it, so i had a go. not saying that all can do it.
You say that the engine is angled. That is correct. the fj20 sump is angled towards the pickup. The gear box is also rotated at this angle to keep it straight in the car.
Adam, if or when you do an fj or sr20 conversion, you will see that the sump will not fit. I used the gemini sump which is larger in capacity and it is baffled unlike the FJ20. The reservior has to go to the back and not the front. Using the gemi one also gives you the clearance over the steering.
My FJ20 is out of a dr30 skyline. it is the model that had the biggest plenum of the FJ20 range. Quite long intake runners too. With my conversion, i have it sitting flat, and it clears the shock tower easily by about 3-4cm
hope this clears some more things up
