clutch problems

i have a 78 td wagon which makes a loud squaling
sort of noise which stops when you rest your foot
on the clutch pedal also there is a faint grinding
noise when the pedal is depressed

whats wrong and how hard is it to fix

mine does the opposite, when u don't have ure foot on the clutch, u can hear a very very faint noise, it's the bearing ,but the noise is shit all so who cares, i'll do it when i re-build my engine.
